A Very Special Tribute To Dilla In Cedar Falls

Monday, May 17th, 2010

FULL SCREEN
The Sounds of VTech / Suite for Ma Dukes in Cedar Falls

A year ago, conductor Jason Weinberger heard Suite for Ma Dukes for the first time. A long time fan of J.Dilla’s, Weinberger’s first thought when he heard the music was that he needed to find a way to perform Miguel Atwood-Ferguson’s “stunning reinventions of Dilla’s music.” “I’m always looking for ways to open up the traditional orchestra experience to new things anyway, so this seemed very natural.”

After a quick Google search, Jason found Miguel and sent him a message to see if there was anyway to get the Dilla pieces in front of one of the orchestras he worked with. A few months later they met in LA and connected over Dilla, Flying Lotus, and Lutoslawski, and the rest is history.

Earlier this year, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the Mochilla Team flew out to Cedar Falls, Iowa to witness J.Dilla’s music being performed as part of the WCFSO’s (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra) tribute to Great American Composers. The evening had Dilla’s music performed alongside legends Duke Ellington and William Grant Still.

“As the person responsible for programming the concert, I probably don’t have to explain how exciting it was for me to find myself performing Dilla’s music with the WCFSO. Even more gratifying, though, were other aspects of the evening – feeling the connections emerge between Dilla and his predecessors William Grant Still and Duke Ellington, taking the orchestra outside of its comfort level and in the process to a whole other level of music making, and especially offering our audience the opportunity to abandon preconceptions and discover something special. In the words of one listener in attendance that night, ‘the music was beyond interesting, especially the movements from Suite for Ma Dukes by J Dilla … we were swept along enjoying sound adventures we never could have imagined that we would enjoy.’”-Jason Weinberger

Watch as this video takes you on a sound adventure and witness the magic of Dilla’s music performed on what would have been the eve of his 36th birthday to a sold out audience. The standing ovation Miguel received was testament not only to the beauty of his work on Dilla’s music, but the power of music. Sounds ability to open ears, minds, and hearts.

“I think Dilla would have been proud of that.”-Jason Weinberger

A Behind The Scenes Look At The Making Of The Ma Dukes Timeless Poster Only On VTech

The Sounds of VTech / Suite for Ma Dukes: Poster Trailer

“Lambe-lambe,” “snipe,” “cartel,” whatever you might call them, many cities throughout the world have an indigenous poster industry. Unlike the normal glossy and four color process poster you see nowadays for shows and venues, the ones we’re talking about are usually letter press, quite cheap, and more than likely, overlooked by the Live Nations and the Golden Voices of the world. But for what we were looking for, it was perfect.

In Los Angeles, when we need a poster,  the company we turn to is Colby Posters. Established in 1946, Colby Posters does poster work for political electioneering, as well as Salsa, Cumbia, and Reggae shows. The big pop and rock shows don’t use Colby anymore, but back in the day they did. Their day-glo hand-lettered snipes are part of the visual lexicon of our city.

For Timeless, as with many of our shows going back to Keepintime, we wanted to have that authentic feel to our promotions. The sense that someone spent time on setting letters, running screens, and actually going around stapling posters to telephone poles, etc. It wasn’t enough to have these shows exist just online or on flyers.

The poster for Suite for Ma Dukes is a special one. Our friend and graphic designer Stephen Serrato did an amazing job incorporating some of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson’s actual music notation into the format. The poster designs became the template we turned to when it came time to design the whole box set.

In this short, an extra on the DVD, we had Todd Mazer go to the Colby plant and film the posters being made. Eric Coleman brought the posters to Ma Dukes when she arrived in L.A. for the concert to unveil them to her for the first time. It’s a simple exercise in classic design, classic workmanship, and old school sentiment.

An Exclusive Suite for Ma Dukes Video And Remix, “Untitled/Fantastic” by Georgia Anne Muldrow Brought To You by VTech and Mochilla

Untitled/Fantastic Remixed: Georgia Anne Muldrow featuring Nokware.

Remixing Suite for Ma Dukes is a brave undertaking.  Several producers and MCs at first accepted and then declined the job.  In the end we think we got the right person.  It is with great pleasure on the week of Mothers Day to release this remix.  Done while mothering by none other than Georgia Ann Muldrow.  This project began as an homage to one mothers love (Ma Dukes) and has now been remixed by another (Georgia) with her son Nokware in her lap.  Two incredible women, one amazing track. Remixed.

Georgia who has done production for Erykah Badu, Mos Def and partner Dudley Perkins was an amazing person to watch at work.  Her feel is so hers.  She seemed so comfortable with the music.  She insisted that she didn’t want to chop the song but to play along as if she was there in the Orchestra.  We wanted her to sing on the track too but her microphone was in the shop for repairs – so on my suggestion she sang the vocals into the lavalier tie clip mic that we used to capture sound for the video.

This remix and the two others we have released here: Te’Amir and Jneiro will be available on a Timeless Remixed EP this Summer.

Enjoy.  Turn it up.

Timeless in LA

Join us this weekend to celebrate the completion of Timeless and it’s arrival to a store near you. If you live in Portland, Seattle or in our home city of Los Angeles this will be a good one. I dare say you shouldn’t miss.

Saturday will be the real blast off though. The beautiful Downtown Independent will host the L.A. Premiere of Timeless. J.Rocc will be re-editing the whole series from turntables LIVE! If you have never seen this done it’s pretty spectacular.  See the video below of the first show, since then it has gotten even better. We will follow the screening with a proper after party featuring J.Rocc, Quantic (all the way from Colombia!), myself and Coleman. We have already confirmed some pretty heavy special guests. A number of you have asked about reserving tickets for Saturday, just be there by 9:30pm and everything will be fine. It’s $10 for the screening and automatic entry to the after-party. I know there is a lot going on this Saturday but at least spend a little of it with us. May 1st is worldwide workers day and we’re happy to be able to celebrate a lot of incredible work with you.

There are lots more screenings planned around the country this summer so stay tuned.

Thanks for your support,

B+ and the Mochilla Crew
