The Sounds of VTech / Mulatu Astatke: Yekermo Sew

Ethiopian, Mulatu Astatke is a giant in African music.  He is the inventor of Ethio-jazz.  His work has inspired many imitations, many admirers, and a whole new generation of fans.  His music veers from the sublime tezetas to the most foot stomping funk.

The award winning and invaluable Ethiopiques series has shed a light into a vital and amazing music scene that existed in Addis Ababa in the 60s. The composer/arranger of that era was Mulatu Astatke.

On February 1st, during the first concert in the Timeless Series brought to you by Mochilla and VTech, he blessed the sold-out Luckman Theater with an amazing show. He shared the stage with veterans of the Los Angeles jazz scene, Bennie Maupin, Azar Lawrence, and Phil Ranelin. The performance was beautiful- showcasing many classics (like Yekermo Sew featured here) as well as some new material.

Nas, Damian Marley, Cut Chemist, Quantic, Oh No, Madlib, and K’naan all have felt the influence of Ethio-Jazz- this Timeless Sneak Peek honors Mulatu and his music.

Music Does Exist in Los Angeles

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

On Friday, the crowds were out in droves with open hearts and open minds to experience a night of amazing music. And what a line-up VTech and Mochilla had in store for that evening!! Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, the young musical genius behind “Suite For Ma Dukes” and his ensemble, DJs Madlib, B+, and Coleman, and last but not least, the headliners, The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

One by one as each act took the stage, the crowd cheered them on with equal enthusiasm. From Madlib’s spacey set inspired by Sun Ra which featured a lot of new music to Miguel and his amazing group of musicians, the nods of approval from the audience could be seen by everywhere.  And before we knew it, it was time for the musical brothers from Chicago to take the stage. With their infectious upbeat hip-hop influenced sound, the HBE came out of swinging, and the crowd was enthralled. Among the scores of admirers who were there to bear witness to it all were musicians Flea, the bassist from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phil Ranelin, American jazz and experimental trombonist, MF Doom, MED, and more. And though the HBE performed an amazing live set, living up to their well-deserved hype,  one moment stood out from the rest. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson returned to the stage to perform “Scrabble,” a song in tribute to Dilla, with the HBE, and the energy in the Echoplex was electric.

It is truly incredible to think that in one evening you had kids cheering for a viola solo, a DJ set and a brass ensemble all in same setting. It’s moments like that fill me utter and complete joy that real music is still being created, performed, supported, and most of all, appreciated by fans new and old.

Thank you Los Angeles, Mochilla, Miguel, Madlib, B+, Coleman, the HBE, and all the fans who come out to our events. We couldn’t have done it without you.

A Look Back: TIMELESS I & II Videos

Monday, March 9th, 2009

VTech and Mochilla offer you a brief glimpse back at the first two events of the Timeless Series.

On February 1st, 2009, VTech and Mochilla started the Timeless composer/arranger series off with a bang. Timeless I: Mulatu Astatke.

Mulatu Astatke, Ethiopian musician and arranger, father of the Ethio-jazz sound, performed to a sold out crowd at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex with special guests, Bennie Maupin, Azar Lawrence and Phil Ranelin.

Musically trained in London, New York and Boston, Astatke became the first African student at the Berklee College of Music. From there he worked with jazz artists such as Duke Ellington and brought back Jazz to his native Ethiopia.

Already beloved for his Ethio-jazz sound, Mulatu has continued his work in different realms of the music world. He continues to work on the modernization of traditional Ethiopian instruments, served as an Abramowitz Artist-in-residence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and  produces songs for many artists from East Africa. In 2005, Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers brought Mulatu Astatke’s music to a new level of sheer appreciation, solely using Mulatu’s music in his film.

On his signature instrument, the vibraphone, Mulatu’s sound reverberated throughout the crowd.

“The concert is a celebration of J Dilla’s life, what he loved and what inspired him. It is a show of support, appreciation and love for his incredible mother Maureen Yancey, whom I recently had the sincere pleasure of meeting and sitting down with. It is very exciting for everyone, there is a real crisp freshness pervading everything on all levels. This is celebrating the infinite possibilities always before us.” - Miguel Atwood-Ferguson

J Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey, is regarded by many of his peers as one of the greatest hip hop producers. Coming on to the scene in the early 90’s, by 1995, he became the go to man for many of hip hop’s elite. Working with such artists as Madlib, Pete Rock, Common, Busta Rhymes, Mos Def, Pharrell, 9th Wonder, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Kanye West, Karriem Riggins, Questlove, and more.

Though Dilla passed February 10th, 2006, due to complications stemming from Lupus and blood disease TTP, those who knew and loved him continue to keep his music alive.

Timeless II: Suite For Ma Dukes  brought the sold out audience  at the Luckman Fine Arts Plaza to their feet as the power of Dilla’s music, love, and energy  overwhelmed their very senses. It was indeed a magical evening.
