Timeless comes to Harlem!!

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Tools of War in conjunction with Maysles Cinema and Mochilla brings Timeless to Saint  Nicholas Park in Harlem with help from VTech.

Tuesday night in Harlem under looming rainy skies the Timeless Machine landed at the Tools of War Park Jam.  Christie-Z and Tools of War have been bringing this amazing free event to parks all over New York for many years now.  Giving people the opportunity to see hip-hop as it was originally done in the park.  Tuesday’s jam was entitled Diggers Delight and as Grandmaster Caz proclaimed all night… “this is not an event for you to hear the standard round the way music, this is an event for you to hear people who dig deeper and come back with the heavy cuts.” Heavy cut finders for the evening were Lean Roc, Bobbito and the incredible Jazzy Jay and Grand Wizard Theodore was just hanging out!

This was a perfect lead in for Timeless which is an event conceived of by people who dig and who assembled an Orchestra to pay homage to that music live!  Needless to say J.Rocc killed it.  It was certainly inspiring to see and hear the music of Mulatu, Verocai and Dilla loud outside and across Harlem.  One man had come down from his apartment on the corner of 135th and St Nicholas, he was a producer for BET.  He told me “I couldn’t work, this music is way too beautiful, and when I saw it was a film too I almost lost my mind… we need more of this”…

Indeed we do.  Turn it up!

The Sounds of VTech / Timeless: JRocc at JACCC video

After all this time, it’s still hard to put into words what Timeless was, is, and will be.

A series of concerts put together by VTech and Mochilla brought our attention to the overlooked maestros of music, Mulatu Astatke, J.Dilla, and Arthur Verocai. These concerts shined a spotlight on their creative compositions allowing a new generation of music lovers to learn and enjoy.

But the journey doesn’t end there. We continue to find new ways to open minds and expand horizons with the music that was showcased on the stage of the Luckman over a year ago, and with the help of  J.Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies, it’s a whole new experience.

With his Live Timeless Mix, J.Rocc creates a visual and audio experience unlike anything you’ve ever heard or seen.

At the JACCC he took us on a journey. From the first time we heard the music to hear it mixed live on stage…  J.Rocc made it all new again, live again… it was Timeless.

A Timeless Evening at JACCC

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Over a year ago, the work of three modern composers took  stage at the Luckman Auditorium at Cal State Los Angeles in a three part series called “Timeless.” Miguel Atwood-Ferguson brought a 60-piece orchestra to perform strikingly beautiful renditions of the work of J Dilla, Arthur Verocai performed his powerful eponymous debut in its entirety, and Mulatu Astatke performed classics and new material from his prolific body of work. Though hip-hop, ethio-jazz, and bossa nova may have stylistic differences, each has had a profound effect on numerous genres today.

Last Friday evening, fans from all across Los Angeles came together under the downtown skyline to celebrate the work of these three composers with a live re-edit of these Timeless performances. J Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies performed this feat, taking to the turntables to scratch, loop, and cut the three performances together, a bravura display of live video editing and reimagining.

Dublab Soundsystem DJs Frosty and Morpho kicked off the evening with a set that mixed together different styles and textures of music from across the globe. Sounds reminiscent of Dilla, Verocai, and Astatke were very much a part of the mix as Frosty and Morpho warmed up the crowd before the screening of Dublab’s Vision Version film.

After Dublab’s set, the projector kicked in, the crowd settled down, and a compilation of Dublab’s Vision Version film series took to the screen. From tUne-yArDs’s howling melodies in an office titled the Echo Park Time Travel Mart to the serene performance by Jennifer Furches on a sunset hilltop in Elysian Park, Vision Version showcased performers playing in idyllic settings throughout Los Angeles.

All the while, Hit + Run was very much a part of the evening. During the screenings, the H+R crew silk-screened free t-shirts, customized with images of all three composers for any fan willing to wait in line. At the end of the night, one hundred fans left with a shirt to commemorate the three artists.

Next up was J Rocc, bringing his masterful skills as a turntablist to the stage. When DJ-ing a film’s worth of universally applauded music, J Rocc found a tasteful balance: certain drum breaks or quick melodies were looped and cut up to give new life and meaning to the arrangements, while other moments were allowed to breathe and develop as originally performed. Each melody, from Verocai’s Sylvia to Dilla’s Gobstopper, was cut – but never stifled – by being altered. One thing was certain, though. All evening, no matter the song, heads nodded and bodies moved throughout the crowd. At the end of the performance, Ma Dukes, mother of J Dilla, claimed that music is universal. With J Rocc’s performance, the music of three composers from three different backgrounds was played together seamlessly, conveying boundless emotion. This is a testament to Ma Dukes’ message, that the music of Verocai, Astatke, and Dilla transcends culture, language, and time. These composers are truly… Timeless.

It has been a week since Brasilian composer/arranger Arthur Verocai performed in Los Angeles. To have Verocai come to Los Angeles once for Timeless was incredible – to get him back for a reprise was pure magic.  Arthur arrived on Monday afternoon after a long flight from Rio.  After some needed rest we began rehearsals on Tuesday morning. The delight in the faces of the musicians as the music struck up was palpable.

After some re-arrangements and adjustments the advertised band of 12 became 14.  We added electric guitar player Woody Aplanalp and master percussionist Krishna Booker.  The band is a Timeless All-Star group with mostly musicians who had played in the original series, many from the original Arthur Verocai concert.

Unforgivably early Thursday morning, we all convened in Santa Monica at KCRW.  Morning Becomes Eclectic has been playing Verocai’s music since the Timeless concert series. It was through host Jason Bentley and producer Ariana Morgenstern’s efforts that the live performance there became a possibility.

That morning the 11 o’clock hour of MBE was truly electric.  Half way through the performance the band sang Arthur happy birthday.  June 17th wasn’t just Arthur’s first live performance on radio in the U.S. ,it was also his birthday.  The performance is archived  HERE.

Friday came fast and the expectation in Los Angeles was huge.  Some internet issues with spam meant a lot of people didn’t get their invites until the last day.  As the lobby filled to capacity Quartetto Fantastico went through their final check. Their performance opening for Arthur was magical, you can hear a little of it on the beginning of the video.

After a quick break Arthur took the stage – the band being smaller than it had been for Timeless took nothing away from the power of the music. Many in attendance actually preferred the performance at the LATC because of its intimacy.  At the end Arthur received a long standing ovation, he then asked the crowd “What music do you want to hear?” The answer Boca do Sol and here it is….
