The Sounds of VTech / The Neck Brace III: Resident Producer #1 - DaiN

Always one to hold it down for his city – producer/MC, DaveNotti, started The Neck Brace showcase series in Portland to both nurture and promote the city’s beatmakers and their work. Having thrown two successful showcases on his own already, Notti aligned with VTech for the third installment to bring out its first national guest – LA’s own, Exile. Along with Ex as the featured performer, Notti also still kept with The Neck Brace format with a showcase/roundtable discussion of sorts with 4 resident producers – DaiN (New Orleans/Portland), DJ Flip Flop (PDX), Theory Hazit (Cincinatti/PDX) and Xperiment (Denver).

In this first of 5 videos from the night, we introduce you to DaiN – an equally-talented MC and producer, originally hailing from New Orleans & currently holding it down in Portland. DaiN’s debut album, Listen, Learn & Live, was released last year on Vinyl Fluid Records and was produced half by his NBIII co-resident, Flip Flop, and half by devonwho of Klipmode. DaiN has also collaborated with the likes of illmaculate, Waajeed, Notti himself, Hi-Res and more. He’s currently working on his next solo album, to be released on Canadian label, Wandering Worx.

In the video above – directed by Paulius Kontijevas – we have just one of the many beats DaiN played that night, entitled “Believe.” For more on DaiN, follow him on Twitter.

The Sounds of VTech / Timeless: JRocc at JACCC video

After all this time, it’s still hard to put into words what Timeless was, is, and will be.

A series of concerts put together by VTech and Mochilla brought our attention to the overlooked maestros of music, Mulatu Astatke, J.Dilla, and Arthur Verocai. These concerts shined a spotlight on their creative compositions allowing a new generation of music lovers to learn and enjoy.

But the journey doesn’t end there. We continue to find new ways to open minds and expand horizons with the music that was showcased on the stage of the Luckman over a year ago, and with the help of  J.Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies, it’s a whole new experience.

With his Live Timeless Mix, J.Rocc creates a visual and audio experience unlike anything you’ve ever heard or seen.

At the JACCC he took us on a journey. From the first time we heard the music to hear it mixed live on stage…  J.Rocc made it all new again, live again… it was Timeless.

VTech Phones & Fresh Selects present Georgia & Dudley “Run It Down” Live @ The Fix – Portland, OR

The Sounds of VTech / Georgia & Dudley "Run It Down" - Live @ The Fix

Following up on last week’s video of Erykah Badu’s afterparty set – we now present to you the performance that set the pace for that fateful July night in Portland – Georgia Anne Muldrow & Dudley Perkins rocking like only they can, live for an overly sold-out & ready crowd at The Fix. The pair paraded through both singles and beloved album cuts alike, working the eager crowd’s scattered energy into a focused beam, commanding their attention like the true funk revolutionaries they are.

In the video we see Georgia, who has written & produced on a song on each of Badu’s last two albums, accompany her partner in the fOnk, Dudley on “Run It Down,” a song from his 2009 album, Holy Smokes (which Georgia also produced). Also included is a clip of the Mama’s Gun holder herself giving Georgia her due respect and making sure the crowd knew exactly what they had just witnessed & figuratively passing the torch onto the next bearer for afrocentric soul music, proclaiming “Mama Afrika is back – & alive!!!”. And ending on as positive a note as they began, Dudley does a give & take chant with the crowd before making way for the rest of the night’s magic to unfold.

The Fix goes down every Thursday night @ the Someday Lounge in NW Portland. Click here for more videos from VTech & Fresh Selects’ Fix collaborations – including videos with Badu, Quadron, and Keys N Krates – all filmed by Paulius Kontijevas. And there’s still much more coming soon – so stay tuned!

VTech Phones & Fresh Selects present a surprise Erykah Badu performance @ The Fix

The Sounds of VTech / Erykah Badu surprise performance live @ The Fix

On July 2nd, VTech & Fresh Selects came together to throw its biggest collaborative show yet – a surprise afterparty performance from the one and only ERYKAH BADU at Portland’s most respected hip-hop party, The Fix. Not only was this Ms. Badu’s first show within Portland city limits in years – but it was held at Someday Lounge, an intimate 300-capacity club, which in itself is a rare element to catch the larger-than-life singer in.

Opening up for Erykah was a joint performance from Georgia Anne Muldrow (who has written & produced on her last two albums) & Dudley Perkins, who quickly won over the beyond sold-out crowd and set the pace and energy for the rest of the night, along with DJ sets from The Fix residents, Rev Shines, DJ Kez and Dundiggy.

With the last minuteness of the announcement of Badu’s appearance (the news was only officially announced 3 hours before the venue doors opened to lines around the block at 9 PM) – the buzz and rumors about the show had run rampant around the city. Some questioned whether the show was a hoax or if she would merely show up but not perform at all.\, etc. So just as all the talk, tension and excitement was reaching its peak, they cut the music a little bit after midnight and Rev Shines got on the mic to announce Ms. Badu as she graced the stage – and the room went ballistic like never before.

Backed by her DJ, legendary producer Rashad “Tumblin Dice” Smith, Erykah ran her set & commanded the eager crowd like a lovingly militant drill instructor – a whistle attached to a custom-made ring and all. She performed 6 or 7 crowd favorites from her last couple of albums and then brought it all to a head with an accapella performance of the very powerful, “Soldier” – and the crowd was right there along with her for every word and adlib. She then exited the stage just as quickly and even mystically as she had arrived, and the party continued well into the night.

Thankfully, all of this was caught on tape and you can catch some of the highlights of this very special moment in Portland history in the video above. Stay tuned for the equally moving video from Georgia & Dudley’s set – as well as some of Badu’s thoughts on Ms. Anne Muldrow.

Keys N Krates Remix “1234″ Live @ The Fix – Portland, OR

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Today we present to you the first of a slew of upcoming videos from The Fix – one of Portland, Oregon’s longest running & most respected hip-hop parties. A fixture (pun intended) in the Portland nightlife & music scene for over 3 years now – the recent collaboration between VTech Phones and the night’s current curator, Fresh Selects, has allowed The Fix to take its already strong reputation for providing the city with both the latest & greatest in guest DJ’s and performers to the next level – while still already having three of PDX’s finest at the helm every week.

Making their PDX debut last month, we had out the much talked about DJ/live band hybrid trio, Keys N Krates, from Toronto. Already known for viral videos of their live recreations & remixes of songs such as Talib Kweli’s “Get By,” The Fugees’ “Fu-Gee-La” & the Aaliyah/Lil Wayne mash-up, “One In A Milli,” as well as their URB.com Live Re-Mixing 101 mixtape – Keys N Krates took this show as an opportunity to unleash some brand new material they had been working on, including a remix of fellow Canadian, Feist’s 2007 hit, “1234.” Luckily, the song was captured on film one of Portland’s brightest talents, Paulius Kontijevas, for your viewing pleasure below.

If you ever find yourself in Portland – The Fix goes down every Thursday at Someday Lounge (125 NW 5th Ave) with resident DJ’s Rev Shines (Lifesavas/Live & Direct), Kez (360 Vinyl/Rock Box), Dundiggy (Rock Box) & your host, Ronin Roc (Ante Up).
