Saying Goodbye to 2009 with PR2010

A Jam Packed Set List!!A Jam Packed Set List!!

We’re bidding adieu to 2009.  Last Tuesday, VTech and Plug Research did it the only way they knew how…. With a huge almost mini festival at the beyond capacity Echoplex in LA. With so much amazing music crammed into one evening, we’re still wishing the night never ended.

Though L.A. loves to boast about being able to wear flip-flops all year long, Tuesday was not the night to be wearing them. Staying indoors next to your heater on a freezing cold night with relentless winds is what most people would deem the safe thing to do, but the promise of good music was just too strong.  Instead, 900 music lovers showed up  and crammed their way into the Echoplex for PR2010. The more people in one room, the more bodyheat! The evening started with Kutmah and ended with a special musical ménage a trios for a crowd pleasing encore. The line-up of artists was as diverse as the crowd that filled the Echoplex, the night was all about the music. Daedelus gave us crazy techno style beats, Milosh performed a beautifully melodic acoustic set, Om’mas played a blend of R&B and Pop with scantily clad dancers, Exile and DJ Day brought us to Planet Rock, and paid an incredible homage to MJ, while Pharoahe Monche played it cool as master of ceremonies – he even brought up Ras Kass for an impromptu accapella.  J.Rocc prepared the stage for the part of the show everyone had waited for with his insane selection of exclusives, rarities and bangers.  Los Angeles is lucky to have one as talented as him.

Bilal didn’t disappoint – he gave an electric hour-long performance before finishing with “Levels” which he had performed at CMJ earlier this year in NYC. And though Bilal made it seem like the evening was officially over as he disappeared from the stage amidst cries for an encore, he surprised everyone when he reappeared with Shafiq Husayn and Om’Mas Keith to close the night out with a bang!  They all sang Hollywood the Sa-Ra hit and the tired crowd expended their final energy bringing it home.

Giving Back: Public Enemy In D.C.

2009 VIRGIN-PUBLIC ENEMY

On November 18th, Virgin Mobile brought Public Enemy to D.C. for a good cause. To celebrate the three year anniversary of National Homeless Awareness Month designated by Congress through the efforts of the RE*Generation, Virgin Mobile’s charity arm. Proceeds from the event went to benefiting homeless youth, helping them keep warm, and giving back to the Sasha Bruce House, where a young person who needs a place to stay- for any reason- can find a home here.

Virgin Mobile sponsored an early Thanksgiving dinner at the Sasha Bruce House with Public Enemy, with a tour of the shelter and participated in a Q&A session with the kids and press.

Once they finished, they proceeded to George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium in true Public Enemy style, on the back of a flat bed truck! Livening up the mood by giving a small performance on the streets of D.C. before taking the stage for one unforgettable night.

“Don’t believe the hype. Just because everyone says the economy’s coming back doesn’t mean that homeless kids don’t need a place to sleep and keep warm.”  Flavor Flav of Public Enemy

Check out the video below presented by VTech in partnership with Virgin Mobile and The RE*Generation from that memorable evening.

VTech Brings Distant Relatives To National Geographic

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

On Saturday, December 12th, in Washington, D.C., National Geographic with Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, presented “Distant Relatives,” an amazing panel discussion brought to the global stage, by VTech.  The “Distant Relatives” conversation traced the roots of Hip-Hop and Reggae music, spanning from the continent of Africa to the sound systems of Jamaica, and onto the streets of America.

The panel guests, Stephen Marley, Kool Herc, DJ Red Alert, Jeff Chang, Rakim, Pat McKay, Waterflow and Big Youth, were moderated by Sway, in what could only be described as a melding of the minds. From the old to the new, from grassroots to high tech, the generational gap in the understanding of these musical genres and all its aspects were addressed and better understood as the guests spoke about their personal experiences, beliefs and various interpretations of what Hip-Hop and music in general, meant to them.

The evening answered many questions, but also left us eager for more!

Afterwards, at Zanzibar on the Waterfront, where the afterparty was held, the panel guests took their place on stage. With DJ Red Alert on the wheels of steel, and Rakim on the mic, the place exploded. Not long afterwards, Stephen and Damian Marley took their place and were soon joined by Nas, keeping the party going well past its curfew.

*Nas and Damian have officially announced the March 2010, release date of their forthcoming CD “Distant Relatives.” With the possibility of more conversations to come, be sure to stay tuned….

The holidays are here, and VTech and Mochilla would like to say thank you with an exclusive and very special download.

Between August 2008 to August 2009, Mochilla and VTech brought you an exceptional array of musical events that pushed the boundaries of today’s music. Ethiopian jazz, Colombian Funk, Brasilian Folk, Jazz, fusion and Hip-Hop – where elders met with youth, where every idea is good, where mistakes are just part of the process and where the audience is the judge.

In “Hear The World,” Eric Coleman (Mochilla), mixes the very best musical moments of the year into one completely exclusive mix CD taken from the recordings made.

Where else could you experience the music of Mulatu, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the Suite for Ma Dukes Orchestra, Arthur Verocai, Azymuth, Quantic and his Combo Barbaro, Karriem Riggins, Jackson Conti, Exile and more all on one album?

The answer is nowhere but on The Sounds of VTech.

Download and listen to what’s possible.

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Did you get a chance to check out the H+R Repeat Offender 4 year Anniversary party?

HIT+RUN has printed almost 100,000 one-of-a-kind shirts since their debut in November 2005, and party goers got to celebrate with H+R in Style. Party-goers got into the event for free by wearing their favorite H+R shirt, and the first 300 guests received complimentary gift bags with mix CDs, stickers courtesy of Sticky Rick, and their choice of a blank T-shirt or poster to customize!

They also enjoyed performances by The Gaslamp Killer, Zackey Force Funk and Crime, plus, amazing DJ sets by Kutmah, Dam Funk, Nobody, Abcnt, and special guests. And the release of the fourth HIT+RUN mix CD by Nobody: “Western Eyes & Serpents’ Breath.” All in all, a great night for t-shirts, music, and good L.A. fun.

Here’s a look back.
