QUANTIC AND HIS COMBO BARBARO

‘Tradition In Transition’ – recorded in Cali, Colombia – is the upcoming album from Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, which sees Will ‘Quantic’ Holland mining the lesser-tapped musical sources from the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa and fusing those rediscovered psychedelic, experimental and rhythmically rich sounds of the past with deep funk and soul elements and folkloric vocal styles. This exceptional longplayer gives life to an explosive sonic snapshot of an ever-evolving musical landscape, played out by a carefully assembled international cast of musical creators.

J.ROCC
The Funky President of the Beat Junkie Crew. For well over ten years, J.Rocc has established himself as one of the illest DJs around, with his signature blends and supreme selection. A steady globe-trotter, J has travelled extensively and showcased his solid knowledge of music with the very best talents, including the late great J Dilla (RIP). His deep catalog of mix tapes and cds are considered classic, from “Syndromes” to “Taster’s Choice.” J is well-versed in a wide array of sounds, and always gets down something serious when behind the decks.

DJ NU-MARK
Nu-Mark began DJing as a teenager in Los Angeles. Over the course of the last two decades, he has amassed a collection of over 35,000 records and refined his technical skills and performance style to the point where he is widely recognized as one of the key figures in the late-90s DJ explosion which pushed the DJ to the front of the culture’s awareness.

SAKE ONE (SF)
A child of Elegua and proud ancestor in training, DJ Sake1 reps San Francisco, CA and attempts to use the universal language of music to create positive social change. Founding member of the (((Local 1200))) DJ crew, student of the late great DJ Dusk (Ibaye), younger brother of the legendary DJ Adam Goldstone (Ibaye), and child of the Struggle — DJ Sake

GANAS
Gary Garay, known by some as Alla behind the paint brush and by others as Ganas behind the turntables at Mas Exitos. Has been creating art since the early nineties. He works in mediums of paint, sculpture, drawing and graphic design, and has done everything from gallery shows to album covers over the years. The common theme in his work is that it always makes some kind of social commentary on a current aspect of living in Los Angeles. It touches on themes of mixing cultures, media and consumerism in the city of angels. He is a first generation, US born Mexican with an eye on the interplay of life vs. survival. Music is also a heavy part of Garay’s inspiration.

Tergiversation, a new video from the Karriem Riggins’ Virtuoso Experience

Friday, July 24th, 2009

From our friends at MOCHILLA, VTech is proud to bring you a new exclusive video from the Karriem Riggins’ Virtuoso Experience.

Tergiversation is a song by Gene Perla. Perla was a bass player who performed with legendary drummer Elvin Jones for many years. Tergiversation is a term that describes an evasion of straightforward action or clear-cut statement. Perla dedicated the song to jazz legend Miles Davis, a tergiversationist if there ever was one, who often turned his back towards the audience as he played.

Karriem Riggins’ Virtuoso Experience bring these internal jazz dedications and conversations to a new audience.

We’ll let the music and the video explain the rest.

Sorry You Missed It

Last Saturday VTech celebrated the launch of the highly anticipated second issue of The New Order Magazine: Pop Portrayal at the Carmichael Gallery in Los Angeles. Music by Sean from Rockers NYC got the party going as art lovers, trend setters, and admirers converged onto the gallery in support of the issue with a double cover featuring contemporary artists, KAWS and Murakami.

Later that evening, VTech sponsored another amazing event, Chavolot! An outdoor fiesta in the parking lot of El Chavo restaurant in the heart of Silverlake on Sunset Blvd.

Whether people sat lazily in the sunshine playing charity bingo or stood eating delicious tacos and drinking beer as they hung out with friends, or applauded for more live music,  at Chavolot, a great time was had by all.

A Look Back at the Karriem Riggins’ Virtuoso Experience

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Last month, VTech was proud to bring you the acclaimed and sold out Karriem Riggins Virtuoso Experience with shows in Seattle, Oakland and Minnesota. The quartet featuring Karriem Riggins on drums, Mulgrew Miller on piano and rhodes, Warren Wolf on vibes and Joe Sanders on bass presented their audiences with shows filled with talent and energy, performing music from diverse musical sources.

On June 25th, a few hours before Karriem’s show in Oakland, CA at Yoshi’s, news broke that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson had passed. When surprise guest and bay area songstress Goapele showed up to join Karriem and the band on stage, she asked to do a short song dedication in memory of Michael Jackson.

Here is a dedication snippet to MJ on the day of his passing from the Karriem Riggins’ Quartet and Goapele with their version of “Can’t help it”.
